Dr. M. Maistry
Head of the School
Dr. Maistry is involved in both pre-service and in-service training of teachers of Economics, Accounting and Business Management. In his doctoral research he worked closely with practicing Economic and Management Sciences teachers, studying the nature of teacher learning in a community of practice. His post doctoral projects include research in t othe status of the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) Learning Area in KwaZulu-Natal, FET Business Studies teacher perceptions of the new FET Business Studies Curriculum, the FET Economics Curriculum Development Project (KZN) and the Entrepreneurship Education and Social Responsibility (Joint Project Leader with Ms J Ramdhani). He is currently supervising eight Masters students and co-supervising two PhD students. He is the secretary of the KwaZulu-Natal Council for Economic Education.
Dr. B. Mngomezulu
History
Dr. Mngomezulu joined the School of social science education as a senior lecturer in History Education and the Deputy Head of School in 2009. He holds a doctorate in African Political History from Rice University (Texas, USA) as well as Masters Degrees in History and Politics.
Dr. Mngomezulu has extensively published in the fields of Education, History and Political Science. He is also a published poet. His current research interests include the relationship between Traditional leadership and service delivery in South Africa and the oral history of the Mngomezulu clan in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Ms. A. Bryan
Travel and Tourism
Ms Bryan’s interests are very much travel and tourism which she teaches and likes to do as frequently as possible. She is passionate about exercise and cooking and enjoys making chocolate chili nougat. Many a happy day is spent pottering in the garden with her granddaughter.
Dr. N. Chili
Travel and Tourism
Dr. Chili is currently the Head of Discipline in the department of Travel and Tourism Education. He obtained his doctorate in Geography from the University of
KwaZulu Natal in 2008. He has first hand experience in education having taught geography for almost 20 years at KwaMgaga High School. He has been involved in a number of research projects involving Education, Geography as well as Travel and Tourism. Some of his publications include The study of Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts on the estuaries of KZN: Implications for Policy management and The study of the Natural and Anthropogenic impacts on the water quality of Mvoti estuary.
Ms. J. Jarvis
Life Orientation
Mrs Jarvis lectures in and is the discipline coordinator for Life Orientation Education. Her main interest lies within the social development aspect of Life Orientation and she hopes to equip her students to become teachers with integrity with the ability to embrace diversity. Her Masters dissertation focused on teachers' understanding of the human right to religious freedom and how this understanding influences the facilitation of Religion Education as part of Life Orientation. She has also published from this research.
Her current PhD research explores how the religious and cultural identities of female teachers of Life Orientation influence their interpretation and facilitation of the human right to gender equality.
She is happily married and she and her husband have four children and three grandchildren. She enjoys her home, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Mr. G. Heath
Geography
Born and raised in Cape Town, Gavin Heath graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Arts (majors in Environmental and Geographical Science, and English) in 1989, a Higher Diploma in Education (Post-graduate) for Secondary Education (English and Geography methods) in 1990, and a Master of City and Regional Planning in 2000. He is very interested in the spatial consciousness of undergraduate students and how that translates into their teaching. Gavin is passionate about South Africa’s outdoors, and seeks to reflect that in his lecturing at all times.
Mr. H. Kazi
Life Orientation / Sport Science
Mr Kazi is a lecturer in Sport Science Education and Life Orientation.
His specialty lies within bio-mechanics, legal aspects of sport and
sport psychology. His research interests are focused mainly on health
related issues. His short term goal is to build up fitter, healthier and
happy students.
Ms. F. Khanare
Commerce Education
I am a lecturer in the Commerce Discipline, teaching Accounting Education, Business Management and Accounting Methods. My interests are in Accounting Education, HIV/AIDS and Participatory Visual Methodologies. I believe that every individual is resourceful and therefore we can always build on possibilities that we all have. I am currently a Fellow of MAC AIDS Fund Leadership Initiative in partnership with Columbia University and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), my work for MAC AIDS Fund includes HIV Prevention plans through participatory visual methodologies.
I have obtained a masters degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and have recently registered for PhD with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NNMU). The research is being sponsored by National Research Foundation (NRF)
Mr. M. Maposa
History Mr. Marshall Maposa recently completed his Master of Education and is a member of the History
Department. He has a passion for History and his research interests include issues around History textbooks and their role in History
Education.
Dr. R. Naidoo
Life Orientation / Sport Science Dr. Rowena Naidoo recently obtained her PhD and is a lecturer and biokineticist (specialising in sports
injuries rehabilitation, health and fitness testing etc). Her research
interests are in primary school health, in particular the nutrition and
physical activity status of learners and the integration of physical
activity within the school curriculum.
Dr. Y. Nompula
Art Education (Arts & Culture)
Dr. Nompula received a BA degree from Zululand University, Honors in
Music Education and a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from the
University of Natal and a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education
degree (Ph.D.) from The University of Iowa.. Nompula has worked in
Atlanta Georgia (USA) in the Education system as a music educator and
extensively involved in cultural exchange programs. She worked as a
senior lecturer in The University of Transkei Music Department,
specializing in voice and choral technique. Dr. Nompula is a member of
the choral adjudication panel in South African Competitions and
Festivals. Her research interests are in multiculturalism, cultural
exchange and challenges in art education. She believes that music is
valuable to its people and quite significant in its cultural context.
Ms. D. Rajput
Life Orientation / Sport Science Ms DI Rajput is a lecturer in Sport Science Education. She lectures on BEd, PGCE and MEd modules with teaching interests in Anatomy, Basic Kinesiology, Coaching and Conditioning, Sports Organisation, Management and Administration and Sport Injury and Rehabilitation. She completed her Master’s Degree in Sport Science at UKZN in 2000. The study focused on “Health and fitness attitude and lifestyle habits of primary school learners in KwaZulu-Natal”. Presently she is in the process of completing her PhD thesis on “Achieving sporting excellence in a transforming society”. She is engaged in a Community Outreach Programme with the Pinetown Christian Centre with the focus on Sports Skill Development and Social Development and Upliftment through Sports. Her research interests are in the physical education curriculum, sports in society and identities of elite sportspersons. She is a member of the South African Association of Human Movement Studies and the International Sociology of Sport Association.
Dr. L. Singh
Art Education (Drama) Lorraine Singh has been involved in the field of Drama and Education for the past 35 years. She completed her Masters in educational theatre at New York University in the late 70s - an exciting time in the 'Big Apple". Her doctoral study focuses on the development of the Arts
and Culture curriculum for schools. Research interests are
applied theatre, arts education,cultural studies and narrative enquiry. Lorraine is married to actor/director Robin Singh and has appeared in Generations and Jozi H on SABC TV
Prof. J. Wassermann
History
Johan Wassermann is Associate Professor in History Education. He has been attached to the Faculty of Education of the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2002. Before that he lectured in History and Geography Education at the Durban College of Education for 10-years. Professor Wassermann holds a doctorate from the University of Pretoria and masters’ degrees from Rhodes University and the University of the Free State. He has published extensively in both the fields of History Education and History.
Ms. J. Ngwenya
Commerce Education
Jabulisile Ngwenya is currently the Head of Commerce Discipline and teaching Accounting. She obtained a Masters degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal. Her current PhD research explores Accounting teachers’ understandings and practices of formative assessment. She has a passion for Accounting and her research interests are assessment and teaching and learning in Accounting. She is involved in the Research project for UMALUSI Maintaining Standards where she is leading the Accounting Team.
